what is sedation?
Sedation is a technique to reduce your levels of anxiety and minimise any discomfort during your dental treatment whilst still keeping you conscious at all times. It is not like having a general anaesthetic. You will not be unconscious but you may fall asleep as you become more relaxed, some people say they were unconscious as the drugs used can cause slight amnesia.
Why can I not have a General Anaesthetic? - General Anaesthetic has not been permitted in General Dental Practice since 1998 and can only be performed in a hospital. Unfortunately because of the demand on the NHS this service is only available for extractions of teeth and requires a referral from your dentist.
What will happen on the day? - You will meet your anaesthetist and they will check your medical history weigh you and take your blood pressure. A small Plastic cannula will be placed in the back of your hand. The sedative drugs can then be administered through this. You will slowly begin to feel more relaxed and a bit sleepy.
When can I eat or drink? - We always advise you to have a light meal before hand and encourage you to drink fluids to stop you from dehydrating. Following your treatment the nurse will advise you on what to eat but you can eat and drink straight away. Just be careful if your mouth is still a bit numb.
How will I feel afterwards? - You will feel a bit sleepy for a few hours. Therefore, you should not return to work or drive until the following day.
Is it safe? - Yes! The method which we will use to sedate you is designed to make this a very safe procedure. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask. We are her to help reduce your anxiety and ensure you have an enjoyable visit to the dentist.
