Crowns - Also called 'caps' are ususally made from gold or porcelain bonded to a precious metal. They are used to stabilise a damaged or weakended tooth where a filing will no longer work. There are made to fit over the entire tooth and are cemented on. The Porcelain is matched to blend with your natuaral teeth they can also be used to alter the shape and alignment to achieve some good cosmetic results.
Bridges - A conventional bridge with positive aspects of it being fixed can look very good with a good degree of predictability. However tooth preparation is more invasive as you sometimes have to remove healthy tooth structure on the anchor teeth either side of the missing tooth and it is difficult to clean properly under these bridges, which may lead to decay of the anchor. However the Maryland Bridge anchors the false tooth with a small metal wing adhering to the back of the teeth either side much less invasive but can only be used in a very small amount of cases.
Inlays and Overlays - These can be made in either gold or porcelain and are an alternative to fillings. We prepare the tooth and take a rubber mould. This is then given to a specialist dental technician who produces an Inlay or overlay tailored to fit your tooth which we then cement in. These can be good on molar teeth if you grind heavily.
Dentures - These are designed to replace lost teeth. We have different types available now from metal ones to plastic with great looking teeth.
Implants - More than any other reason, teeth need to be replaced for function it is important that we can chew our food to help aid digestion. Dental Implants provide a long term solution. A small titanium screw is implanted into the jaw bone and a crown or bridge is then fitted on top. This is the nearest thing to a normal tooth.
